The 1961 album, “Ezz-Thetics”, by the George Russell Sextet, remains a watermark in jazz exploration. The lineup includes Don Ellis on trumpet, Dave Baker on trombone, Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, Steve Swallow on bass, Joe Hunt on drums, and George Russell on piano. The track featured in this video, “Round Midnight” (a Monk-Williams composition), is a stirring example of the brilliance of Eric Dolphy. Eric would be dead a mere three years later at the age of 36. This video is a tribute to his genius. Note: If anyone objects to this video due to copyright infringement, please make contact and it will be removed.

The fantastic track “Part I: Nestor’s Saga (The Tale Of The Ancient)” is taken from John Surman’s great album “The Amazing Adventures Of Simon Simon” (1981) resp. from the sampler album “John Surman – :rarum” (2004). The album is recorded by ECM Records in excellent audio quality. Listen and enjoy it. MUSICIANS: John Surman – Soprano & baritone Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Synthesizer Jack DeJohnette – Drums, Congas, Electric Piano Produced by Manfred Eicher (ECM Records, 1981). “John Surman was one of the very few saxmen in England to find a significant audience in rock during the late ’60s, playing gigs regularly at venues like the Marquee Club in London. Also a clarinetist of some renown, and no slouch on keyboards either, the atmospheric sounds that Surman creates on his horns has been a major asset to the ECM label ever since the late ’70s; but, before that, he was an extremely prolific artist on Deram, Futura, Dawn, and Island, cutting seven solo albums between 1968 and 1974 on those mainstream pop-oriented labels, as well as recording with Morning Glory on Island. One of England’s top jazz players of the past several decades, Surman is particularly strong on the baritone. Surman played in jazz workshops while still in high school. He studied at the London College of Music and London University Institute of Education in the mid-’60s, played with Alexis Korner and Mike Westbrook until the late ’60s, and recorded with the latter until the mid-’70s. He was voted best …

Enjoy the magic of George Harrison and The Beatles.A very underated and overlooked song. ~It`s All Too Much~ George Harrison — vocals, lead guitar, Hammond organ John Lennon — lead guitar, harmony vocals Paul McCartney — bass, harmony vocals Ringo Starr — drums, tambourine David Mason and three uncredited — trumpets Paul Harvey — bass clarinet The song was recorded at De Lane Lea Studios, 129 Kingsway, making it one of only a very few Beatles’ tracks not recorded at EMI Studios. Harrison and John Lennon supposedly played lead guitars on the song. But some accounts states that Paul McCartney indeed played lead guitar on this song and John Lennon supplied the guitar feedback, allowing George to be free to concentrate only on vocals during the recording of this song. “It’s All Too Much” by The Beatles, first appeared on the 1969 Yellow Submarine film soundtrack album. It was written and sung by George Harrison. It was originally recorded in 1967, shortly before the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and had been slated to appear on the next release, Magical Mystery Tour, but it was pushed back. (Lyrics) To your mother It’s all to much It’s all to much When I look into your eyes, your love is there for me And the more I go inside, the more there is to see It’s all too much for me to take The love that’s shining all around you Everywhere, it’s what you make For us to take, it’s all too much Floating down the stream of time, of life to life with me Makes no …

***This is the COMPLETE composition, not an excerpt*** Pietari Inkinen, a lesser known but up and coming (he’s only 29 years old after all) Finnish conductor, leads the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in one of Sibelius’ lesser performed but most glorious tone poems, “Nightride and Sunrise”, Op. 55, which was completed in 1908. This piece, if ever one of Sibelius’ pieces (other than the ubiquitous but always marvelous ‘Finlandia’) better painted a portrait of his native Finland, is an excercise in Finnish minimalism (perhaps I am biased in this assertion, but being a Debussy fanatic before only Sibelius, I can’t help but wonder if the meeting of these 2 great minds may have produced the minimalism in this monstrously magical piece). The piece, per Sibelius, was intended to express the subjective, spiritual view of nature by, as he put it, “an ordinary man”. He wrote the symphonic poem for piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns (only 4 horns is hard to believe at times when I listen), 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, bass drum, snare drum, tambourine, triangle and strings. The piece, misleading as the title may be, is more of a 3 movement work; ‘Nightride’ is seemngly split in to 2 seperate miniatures, opening with a “gallop”, then settling to a more sedate “canter”. At the 9:00 minute mark “Sunrise” is announced with soft woodwinds and building horns. I have split this piece at the 9:00 minute mark for this reason …
