Painting by Yvonne W. A Prelude and Fantasy for Orchestra, based on number integer sequences derived from the work of Fibonacci and Goldbach. This work is scored for winds (piccolo, flute, English horn, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and tenor sax), string ensemble (with strong roles for the cellos and double bass), brass (trumpets and trombone), harp, piano, harpsichord, xylophone, timpani and tubular bells. In a letter to a mathematician friend, the composer wrote: There is a certain regularity in the pattern of the Goldbach sequence which (musically) I call the happy man theme. The carefree man. I oppose this to the all-too-human theme, which I invented myself. It denotes human confusion, wandering, inability to choose a path, and serves as the opening theme of the piece The Fibonacci sequence, as translated into music here, does not represent happiness, but order. It is not, or does not sound like, a felicitous type of order. It is rather rigid, demanding and even threatening (especially when opposed to the happy sequence of Goldbach). Analysis: The pantonal all-too-human opening theme is played by the English horn first, and then taken up by the flute. The phrases suggest the inconstancy and the benign meandering of the human spirit. At 0:39, the theme is interrupted by the first nine notes of a Fibonacci sequence: 1, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 . . ., played on piano, harp and clarinet, punctuated by a bass tremolo.
