Clarinet Tube

Mozart entered this Concerto in his work catalogue on March 15, 1784. It is most likely he first played this Concerto at a subscription concert on March 24, 1784 at the Trattnerhof. Mozart sent this Concerto and three others (plus the Linz Symphony) to Salzburg to be copied on May 15, 1784. As he stated those in Eb and G (K449 and K453) had been written for Fräulein von Ployer, but reported this Concerto and K451 were in his possession only , we must assume the Concertos K450 and K451 were written for himself. In a letter of May 26, 1784, Mozart wrote “I really cannot choose between the two of them, [K450 in Bb and K451 in D], but I regard them both as concertos which are bound to make the performer perspire. From the point of view of difficulty the Bb concerto beat the one in D”. Manuscript copies of six PIano Concerto (no doubt including K450) were advertised in the Wiener Zeitung of July 10, 1784 by Lorenz Lausch. The first publication of the Concerto K450 we know of is by Artaria in 1798, but this may have been taken from unused plates produced by Hoffmeister from around 1786 Mozart’s autograph of this Concerto is of interest as it contains many revisions made during the course of composition, helping us understand how Mozart worked [See John Irving's Mozart's Piano Concertos, page 207-208 for details.] Most interesting are those to the Andante, which Robert Levin has used to reconstruct Mozart’s original thoughts (recorded on L’Oiseau-Lyre 455 814-2).
