Shaeda (Original Composition; Woodwind Trio)

This is both my first attempt at a wind ensemble, and also my first attempt at practicing soundtracking. Basically, the idea in these soundtracking exercises is for me to capture the essence of something, whether it be a person, place, thing, idea, or feeling, and transform it into music. What Nobuo Uematsu does in the FInal Fantasy soundtracks is a great example. I’ll also be using the same format as a video game soundtrack, that is, putting in a repeat so the track can loop endlessly (only putting a second ending in this case just so the song can end, although it can technically go forever and would if it were looped as a background music to, say, a video game). As for what the song is inspired off of, it’s the character Shaeda from Ted Dekker’s books Lunatic and Elyon. What I’m most unsure of with this piece is whether I really captured the essence of Shaeda- parts of the song seem to drift from her character. If anyone has also read Lunatic and Elyon, I’d love your imput as to how I did in putting her character in the music. I would have liked to put more dissonance in there, but with only three instruments and my relative inexperience, it wouldn’t have worked very well. Shaeda is a Leedhan in Ted Dekker’s books Lunatic and Elyon. They belong to him, and Shaeda belongs to him- I just love Ted Dekker so I simply had to try this. I only have rights to the music, not what it was inspired from. Copyright Thomas Yee 2009
